From Ghanzi to Windhoek 24/25 April 2017

Due to popular demand, (thanks to both of you))… the holiday blog returns. Sorry it has been a bit stop start, but signal has been so poor, it was impossible to connect, so I will catch the past week in two additional posts. To make up for lost time, I will cut and paste some Facebook posts too, apologies to those who think they are seeing double.

Dawn and I arrived in Ghanzi, late afternoon last Monday and overnighted at the Kalahari Arms Hotel. After seeing some of the dodgy offerings accross Botswana, we were sure we would end up in a shack with an outhouse. PS…dont look up the Desert Paradise Restaurant In Kang when you are in the area.

We were pleasantly surprised. The hotel is clean, unpretentious and offered us decent meals, quiet and comfy rooms. Well worth the stop over there, close to the border. Breakfast was good and plentiful. We did have a laugh, when I had to teach the staff how to use their industrial toaster. So I did a quick demo and lecture – hopefully it helps to speed up the breakfast process for the next travellers.

On Tuesday 25th April, we crossed the Botswana/Namibia border in absolute record time. Very pleasant and efficient experience for us, I guess we were lucky because there were very few other people at the time.

Murphy popped up shortly after we crossed the border- I had been exceptionally good with ,maintaining speed limits for 1100kms, when for a minute I lost focus on speed as we discussed the time changes. Out popped a traffic troll…..damn it!  I was doing 134km an hour in a 120 zone and I was shown that the applicable fine is Nam$2400. I was on my best and most courteous behaviour and explained that I really hadnt meant to speed and I was very sorry. The officer said he would give me the minimumof Nam$1000. I suggested to him that this was a sad way to start my holiday and he then asked me what I thought he should do. Naturally, I suggested a “strong talking too and to be given a chance”….. He obliged! So no fine thank goodness.

The rest of the journey proceeded uneventfully and at the appropriate speed limits. We arrived in Windhoek just at lunchtime – so we headed off to Joe’s Beerhouse. Then the data and sim card admin and finally we arrived at the hotel – Hotel Heinitzburg.

After an interesting check in with the obnoxious manager, we eventually settled into our beautiful rooms.

Said goodbye to my Botswana road trip companion on Tuesday night. Thanks Dawn for great company, many many laughs and for catching a cab to the airport at sparrow fart that morning. Just a reminder that if it is to 2 o’clock it isn’t 4 o’clock, whether the travellers are coming or going. (Ps… loved the stay at the Kala’ari Harms).

Then I met my new roadies for the Namibia trip at the airport in Windhoek. Mom and Dad had a late takeoff due to cabin crew strikes at OR Tambo. Awesome service from SAA crew though!

We headed straight to Joe’s Beerhouse for some refreshments, followed by a whirlwind trip to the church and the millennium building, which is quite impressive. Followed up by a well earned nap for the weary travelers who left home at 5.30am. Thanks Janeen for the awesome door to plane uber service!!!

We watched a beautiful sunset from the hotel and had a great dinner. Early night as we are hitting the road to Etosha bright and early tomorrow
