The trip to Bergen and walking in the rain

Back again….. We had an awesome flight from Joburg to Heathrow.the SAA crew checked all our luggage straight through to Oslo, which meant Dawn no longer had to clear customs in Heathrow. Fantastic service yet again from the crew and a great meal. We had one bout of serious turbulence, I was packing a bag into overhead and Dawn was changing in the toilets. My knees just buckled and a I had a sense of weightless for a second. Jeez it was quite scary and neither of us had to be told a second time to sit down and put seatbelts on!

The rest of the flight was great and I was so tired that I actually got about 4 hours of sleep on the plane…a record for me! Disturbed sleep, but sleep none the less. Arrival at London was on time. Then we had the grumpy Heathrow security staff to deal with, yep Kaylee they are still so mean and unfriendly. Luckily no issues for us. We had access to the lounge and only about a two hour wait till the flight to Oslo. The next flight was also uneventful and we arrived in Oslo early ready for our connecting flight to Bergen. We checked our luggage in, got our boarding passes and went through to the lounge. Then the fun started…..

We went down to board our plane, I glided effortlessly through (sense the drama…..) the check in. Dawn not! So she is asked to contact the crew, who then advise her that she missed her flight, which boarded 40 minutes earlier and her luggage had been taken off the place. Say whaaaaattttt????   Yep! Seems that I had managed to book us onto 2 separate flights. Thats what comes from doing to separate bookings at separate times. Then neither of us checked the boarding passes!!! OMG!!!! NOw what…..dat…da daaaaa (cue the Jaws theme tune). No way was I going to get on the flight and leave Dawn behind, no cellphone contact and not knowing what was going on. So I told the crew member that I would have to uncheck in….

SAS – Scandanavian Airlines were simply brilliant. They put Dawn onto my flight and told us that although her luggage had not been located yet, it would be sent to Bergen later. Joh!  We were advised that when we landed in Bergen we must go to lost luggage and make a claim. Okay, well at least we were still together, the rest was up to the universe complying and Murphy leaving us alone. We did manage to have a few chuckles….especially at the thought of Dawn wearing a pair of my jeans…..with the hems folded over fourteen times!

Landed in Bergen got my luggage and we went to the lost luggage counter. Cue happy music….. After a brief check on the system,  the guy confirms that Dawn’s luggage was located and is on the next flight, due to land in 50 minutes time, which it duly did. In the meantime we got our data and pre paid airtime cards and sorted ourselves out. Although I did get a dysfunctional sim card which took me half a day, ten phone calls, including Jen having to check, phone, whatsapp, sms and phone again…thanks again Schmenks!

We then caught the uber efficient Flughaffen bus to the city centre. After a brief walkaround due to some confusing directions, we got to our apartment just after 7.30pm. We went out to the nearest restaurant, had pizza and coleslaw for dinner. Had a well earned and much desired shower and fell into bed! Exhaustated I tell you, we had been travelling since 12.30pm the previous day and had a little glitch to tax our mental state. But all was well in the end. Lovely 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment, in the heart of everything in Bergen.

Today we were up and out just after 8.30am…had a blah breakfast and spent the day walking around Bergen. The weather was not fantastic…it drizzled on and off all day and got colder and colder. We did over 18000 steps today….more than 12.5km. We walked through the centre, through Bryggen to the fort and then to the heritage site, with the ancient wooden buildings. With all the cloud and rain, the visibility was not great, so we could not go up the funicular. That is the plan for tomorrow morning…irrespective of the weather conditions. Being so close to everything we could pop back to the apartment regularly. Finally got my phones sorted after 3 ish. Then we wandered around town went to a mall and then home again

All those who did not over indulge at dinner tonight stand up….Leanne what the hell are you doing??? We went to Fjellskal Fisktorget, a seafood restaurant at the old fish market. Very unassuming decor, but the best seafood meal I have eaten ever. I had scallops to start, followed by a king crab and mussels combo. I thought I had died and gone to seafood heaven!!! Dawn had a red perch with baby potatoes. I ended my meal with a delish creme brulee. The price tag was very hefty…but as if we need a justification, this is our combined birthday dinners.

Now back at the apartment and ready for bed! Enjoy the pics.

The photos are fabulous, just as I imagined Bergen would be. Daddy would have loved to have been with you at that fish restaurant! Not me hey? But I feel so very very very sorry for that poor little piggie!!!!! Hope the rain stops long enough for you to enjoy the funicular. Enjoy your day. Love you lots. Mommy and dad xxxxx
